big snow

With a forecast calling for something like 10 inches of snow and the MBTA shut down, I had a good old fashioned snow day. Except this snow day involved still doing my best to work. I did get outside to do what I could to capture the storm.

winter trees

One of the challenges I have been finding as I try to take more pictures is simply identifying a worthwhile subject from my everyday surroundings. This afternoon I ventured out as the sun was starting to set but knew that the sunset was not going to be my subject. As I began my wandering I was captured by the contrast between the leafless neighborhood trees and the winter sky.

wonder winterland

We had our first real snowfall of the season today so I grabbed got decked out in my foul weather gear, grabbed the camera, and hopped the T up to Revere Beach to see what Revere Beach looks like in the snow.

ice beach

I went for a walk down to Constitution Beach, something I have been meaning to do since the summer. Upon arriving I was pleased to see that the shoreline of the beach was frozen. Boston has been experiencing some extremely cold weather so I wasn't exactly surprised but I am always interested to see big bodies of water with ice.

the first week back

I am hoping to take a picture every day of the year, and ideally not just with my phone. I decided to take my pocket camera with me each day into work to see if I would be interested in trying to take pictures during my daily routine. Combining the first full week back at the office with the first real week of winter did not lead to me making much of an effort and I simply just took a picture each day on the way to the office. I'm not very pleased with my "results" but at the same time I am glad I did take pictures.

textures on a neighboring street

Some Sundays are slower than others and today was one of the slow ones. I went for a short walk around the neighborhood exploring a couple streets I had yet to walk on. With a mist in the air and very little visibility, I ended up just focusing on some ordinary items.

a common walk

I am consistently amazed by how differently I look at the world when walking with my camera. When going about my everyday life I tend to be lost in my own thoughts and don't specifically notice much, but when I have my camera in hand every little thing is a potential picture. I took a walk down to the butcher today and while I wasn't shocked by anything I saw, I certainly did see some things that I'd simply walked by 20 times before.

a sunset remedy

The setting sun is one of my very favorite events to photograph (and enjoy in general) and I have long longed for a "good sunset spot" in Boston. I made about zero effort to see a sunset in Boston in 2014 and now have witnessed both sunsets of 2015. This location is a mere four minute walk from where I live.

a new year

Welcome to 2015. I don't know quite how often I will get to spend time with photography but I have been feeling a need to be creative so I will see what I can do. I didn't get out much with my camera at all in 2014, save for some traveling, but having moved to a new place with a new neighborhood I'd like to do more this year.
